Plastic water bottles are banned in the town of Concord MA

It takes 17 million barrels of oil per year to make all the plastic water bottles used in the U.S. alone. That’s enough oil to fuel 1.3 million cars for a year.

I’ve been on an anti-bottled water campaign for years, especially since taking my kid to see the movie, Tapped back in 2010. The CEO of Nestle Waters showed up at the Q&A after the movie and was not especially courteous to my daughter when she asked a question about tap water in schools.
With my SuRutopia New Year’s Resolution underway, I cannot focus on how bad bottled water is. I’ve got to twist the problem around into a solution instead.  Concord, MA has done that for me. As of January 1, 2013 Concord became the first town to ban the sale of to ditch the single-use plastic bottle. It took  local activists three years  to launch an effective Ban the Bottle campaign, the new law  makes it illegal to sell non-sparkling, unflavored liquids in single-serving (PET) bottles of 1 liter or less.

BYOB

The ban is a symbolic and environmentally positive act that has a chance to make an impact at the state level. I hope it grabs attention nationally- help me spread the word, OK? Bottled water bans will reduce the overall consumption of plastic and can help increase the consumption of tap water.

Beautifully designed water fountains are what I suggested to Mayor Bloomberg when he started his super sized soda battle. If you don’t want peeps drinking junky sodas, why not make the best beverage, NYC tap water, freely available? Seemed like a no brainer to me.

Its actually quite easy to BYOB once you get into the habit of it.  Here’s hoping that more towns adopt bottled water bans in the year ahead.
