We lost our last supermarket after Sandy blew into town last fall. I admit, I only shopped there when I needed some essential at the last minute. Most of my food comes from CSAs, farmer’s markets or a nearby health food store.

I won't be shopping at this big box drug store!

I won’t be shopping at this big box drug store!

Instead of a supermarket, we now have a brand spanking new Walgreens in it’s place. More than a decade ago, we lost another supermarket to Rite Aid. I remember the community being up in arms, posting signs and vowing not to shop at Rite Aid. The new Rite Aid wiped out numerous small mom and pop pharmacies that had co-existed for years and years. There seems to be little or no outrage about Walgreens moving into town,  I guess more people are sleepwalking through life these days.

I find these big box pharmacy places highly disturbing. There are rows upon rows of edible foodlike substances that are not at all healthy for human consumption. Just the sort of garbage that I never bought in the supermarket. And just the sort of junk that creates chronic illness, creating demand for  all the OTC and Rx drugs sold in the big box pharmacy. Aisles upon aisles of hair care, skin care and make up products – all loaded with chemicals, many untested and many carcinogenic. Do we really need all this stuff?

Walgreens stores in particular seem to be popping up everywhere you turn. Like some sort of virus. Most of them position themselves close to another chain pharmacy like Rite Aid or CVS. Clearly they have some sort evil plan to takeover the drugstore world.

I will not shop at Walgreens. Homogenous chain stores are not what I want in my town. By buying even one item in this ugly beast, it supports more takeover of small businesses by faceless, soulless corporations.

See the solar panels on this independent pharmacy? The owner lives in our town. A real person, not a corporation.

At this point, there is only one other pharmacy in town. I can only hope that Healthy Choice, the independent pharmacy will be able to survive with 2 big box giant drugstores in our small little downtown. This pharmacy is owned by a real person named Phil. He actually lives in our town. He even has solar panels atop his building. That’s the sort of business that I want to support. In addition, he has knowledgeable staff that can direct you to vitamins, supplements, herbs and even teas that can better deal with health issues than many drugs do.

Big box pharmacies sell cigarettes, Healthy Choice does not.
The monster chains sell creepy flu shots, Healthy Choice offers better options for building immunity through cold and flu seasons.

I hope that you will spend your time and money in small independent stores in your town. Don’t feed the corporate big boxes, there are hidden costs to their cheap prices.
