I gave my first of many Peaceful Resistance workshops last night. It can be a little stressful and daunting when you teach a new topic for the first time.
This workshop is an overview of strategies and skills that are part of an arsenal of non violent direct action tactics. As fracked gas infrastructure heads out of Pennsylvania and across the northeast, many groups are starting to hold trainings concerned citizens along the pipeline routes.
These pipelines will push us over the climate change cliff and our lives and the lives of future generations will be impacted. Smart people are starting to stand together and say NO to fracked gas infrastructure like pipelines, compressor stations and LNG (liquid natural gas) ports.
Direct action works.
As I write this post, the White House just issued a statement saying President Obama will veto any bill green lighting the construction of the Keystone XL pipeline.
This is a result of everyone who has signed petitions, marched, protested, sat-in, locked down, sat in tree blockades for months and otherwise taken action. We should celebrate this moment as we’ve pushed President Obama with our opposition to Keystone XL over many years. If not for direct action, than the northern leg of the Keystone XL pipeline would be flowing oil by now.
My work on the Keystone XL pipeline is the reason I find it so important to educate and empower my community about non-violent direct action. In case you can’t make it to any of the free workshops I’m offering this month, I’m posting a short, sweet revolutionary reading list for you.
Here goes!
The Dandelion Insurrection by Rivera Sun
This light hearted novel of protest and revolution is a great story with loads of take home messages. I hope to host an event with Rivera sometime this spring or summer as she heads east for a book tour.

Revolution by Russell Brand
I have his book on both Kindle and audio versions. He’s a delight to listen to! He also has plenty of interviews and such on YouTube along with his Trews Channel on You Tube. You might think Mr. Brand is just a comedian and actor who was once married to some pop star, but I assure you he is way deeper than that! Perhaps it is due to his regular mediation practice that he can dig so deep and communicate so insightfully.
Beautiful Trouble
The how to manual for digging deeper into strategies that can bring about real shifts in the balance of power. This book will get you up to speed on pranks, stunts, flash mobs and lots of other tactics for peaceful protest. This compilation includes case studies, principles and strategies, truly an eye opening read for anyone who wants to learn more about revolutionary ways.
If you take the time to read these three books, your heart and your mind will be blown open and ready to join the revolution that is waiting, just around the corner.
