The phrase “bread and circus” was used by a Roman writer to deplore the declining heroism of Romans after the Roman Republic ceased to exist. The government kept the Roman populace happy by distributing free food and staging huge spectacles.
When I see Jersey Shore, the Kardashians and NFL Football on TV with tons of advertisements for food that is not really food, I wonder if we are watching the decline of American civilization.
My dad had special names for our TV. Idiot box and boob tube were his most common references. Our TV was in a cabinet that was locked most of the time. If we wanted to watch something, we had to make our case in the beginning of the week when the TV listings came out in the Sunday New York Times. At the time, I thought my dad was the meanest guy in the world. Now I see the wisdom of his ways.
As far as food goes, I’m convinced that the food industry wants us to remain clueless and hungry. That’s why they focus on calories, fat and carbs and neglect to inform you about ingredients.
If you must watch the big game today, do two things.
1. Eat real food, not faux food. If you can’t pronounce it, don’t eat it.
2. Don’t eat any food products that are advertised during the superbowl. Any company with a big enough budget to afford a commercial during the superbowl, is not a company that has your best interests at heart! When it comes to food, smaller is better.
No doubt that Doritoes will be advertising during the big game. You can find far better tortilla chips than Doritoes in your local health food store. Choose organic corn chips, that way you’ll avoid eating GMO corn. Make sure there are no hidden sources of MSG in your chips. Click here to see all the ways MSG can hide in your food.
Better yet, dip some carrots and celery into your guacamole instead of chips altogether.
Here’s an easy guacamole recipe.
Rubin Rodeo Guacamole
2 ripe avocados, mashed
juice of 1 lime
2 cloves crushed garlic
½ cup finely chopped cilantro
chili powder, to taste
¼ cup chunky salsa
Mix it all together. Enjoy!
