Winter or no winter, spring is right around the corner. This is the time of year to start seeds indoors for your veggie garden. It’s not rocket science to grow some food from seed. I’ve been saying for years that food grown from seed pays better dividends than any stock on Wall Street.
Here’s how to get started.
Find some containers. This year, I’m playing with egg cartons and clementine containers. I lined the clementine containers with some used coffee filters that I happened to have from my coffee rescue project.
Add some warm water to seed starter mix. I buy it from a nearby garden store, or you can buy it online. Because I’m into worm composting, I mix my seed starter 50/50 with vermicompost (also known as worm poop). Click here for a nice article by someone who did her own experiment proving that vermicompost is super for starting seeds.
Place the moist seed starter mix into the containers.
You’ll need to keep them moist until seeds germinate. You can do that using plastic wrap, or put the whole container into a clear plastic box, making a mini greenhouse.
Tomorrow, February 21st is a new moon. A great day to plant seeds. Over the years, many farmers use the cycles of the moon to plant and harvest their crops.
I’m incorporating this lunar wisdom for this year’s growing season. You can learn more about it by clicking here: Gardening by the Moon.
