Someone on Facebook this morning suggested that everyone in the path of Hurricane Irene “stay alert and happy”.
Happy?
The words “happy” and “hurricane” simply do not go together.
Somehow I simply can’t muster up that emotion today as I prepare to stay in my house surrounded by giant trees in the face of high winds and rain. Quite frankly, if I could be totally honest, I’m angry.
I’m frustrated that people continue to be in denial about the connection between our weather and our use of fossil fuels. It does not escape my attention that storms of this size and character will be the new normal on a warmer planet.
This monster storm is yet another inconvenient reminder that we must find a way to live a lower carbon future. When will people wake up to this reality AND take meaningful steps to change the way we’re doing things?
I’m reminded of an Op-Ed in the Washington Post earlier this year. Filmmaker Stephen Thomson of Plomomedia turned this op-ed into a short video, click here to watch it.
This storm has made me more committed than ever to get to DC and participate in the campaign to stop Keystone XL and the tar sands development. Please join me, click here.
