The bulk aisle in my local store.

The bulk aisle in my local store.

When I’m not harvesting food from my community garden or back yard or CSA, I have to hit a store to shop for the rest of my food. The market where I do the remainder of my food shopping, Mrs.Greens, was bought out by a big corporation which has been renovating the store all summer. First mistake they made was changing their produce aisle from 100% organic. Customers complained loudly, and were successful in getting the company to re-instate the previous owner’s all organic produce department.

Next stop, the bulk aisle.

I’m a huge fan of shopping in the bulk aisle. This week, when I shopped at Mrs. Greens, I found that the remaining bulk items were on sale: 50% off. That could only mean one thing: they were phasing out the bulk aisle. I did what I could- I stocked up on Pecans, Rice and Beans. And then I got busy working to reinstate the bulk aisle!

I took this photo and posted it on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook, letting everyone know that if they love the bulk aisle like I do, they better let the folks at Mrs. Greens know about it.  Their website, www.MrsGreens.com is colorful and beautiful with all the words and images you’d ever want to see. There is no page with names of managers or email addresses, but there is a page for you to “contact” them.

Here’s what I wrote on their contact page.

I’ve been shopping at the Mount Kisco Mrs. Greens store since it opened many years ago. I was concerned when I saw all your bulk food on sale for 50% off. I grabbed all the brown rice and rolled oats I could- staples in our house.
I sure hope you are not planning on eliminating the choice of bulk food from your store. In fact, if you are really committed to “green” and “healthy”, you should be increasing it!
If you decide to eliminate bulk food items, you’ll be giving me and countless other shoppers more reasons to travel to White Plains and shop at Whole Foods instead of your stores.

We must do all that we can to create the kind of world we want. I want food stores with health supportive food that has less packaging. If you live near a Mrs.Greens and want items in bulk, let them know! Here’s the link to the contact page: http://mrsgreens.com/contact/
