The Corn Refiners Association just launched a $30 million dollar 18-month marketing campaign to convince you that high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) is a natural as sugar and honey. You’ll soon see all sorts of corn related hype on TVs, newspapers and Internet screens across the country.

Just like the McDonalds marketing campaign , the Corn Refiners have their sites set on moms. Why? Because moms are the gatekeepers to food in the home. They make most of the decisions when it comes to preparing and buying foods for their families.

Thanks to food educators and the decline in children’s health, American moms are buying less HFCS because they are reading ingredient labels and buying fewer products made with corn syrup. Movies like King Corn and books like Michaeal Pollan’s Omnivore’s Dilemma have raised the Food IQ when it comes to corn.

The Corn Refiners Association is a large and well funded group. Chuck Conner spent 4 years as president of the Corn Refiners Association before he became the USDA Deputy Secretary. They keep their eye on the media. If you ever say anything in the press about the dangers of HFCS, the Corn Refiners Association sends you a big packet of their pro-corn syrup propaganda. They are also big in writing letters to the editor.

These days, the Corn Refiners have more to worry about besides the detrimental health effects of corn syrup. Corn prices are heading skyward thanks to peak oil, climate change and ethanol.
My suggestion: stay away from corn syrup or any other processed, industrialized corn products. Either grow your own corn or buy it at the farmer’s market for your family. Don’t fall prey to $30 million marketing dollars! Corn syrup is not natural or healthy. Real corn grown by small local farmers is what you want if you’re concerned for the health of your family and the well-bing of our planet. Pay your local farmer, not your doctor!
