Happy Backyard Chickens

We are in the final editing stages of the Chick(en) Flick this week. This requires listening to every word of the interviews we filmed along with selecting “b roll”- video footage that makes the words even more compelling.

We’ve got some beautiful footage of some very happy backyard chickens from 4 different families in Westchester County.  Its clear that these chickens are well loved and cared for and that they lay delicious, nutritious eggs.  I am hopeful that this short film will become a useful tool to change outdated zoning ordinances that prohibit chickens.

The town where I live requires 10 acres for backyard chickens. Meanwhile, in Brooklyn, NY one only needs 10 square feet per chicken to keep them in their backyard.

Many of my friends think the answer is to just by organic eggs. Unfortunately, organic is not the panacea that many people think it is.  Large corporate egg operations now control 80% of the market, paying lip service to organic standards.  Check out this eye opening short movie from the Cornicopia Institute on eggs farming. Check out their egg scorecard to see how your brand of eggs measure up.
