Now that we are going on day #3 of a new dog here at the Rubin Rodeo, I am reminded about the importance of creating good habits. Up until this week, when Edgar was rescued from a Manhattan apartment, this little dog had only pee’d and pooped indoors. From what I’ve learned from the vet and a local canine counselor, in order for Edgar to learn how to do his business outside, we’ve got to take him outside on a very very regular basis.
Needless to say, I’ve been outside walking around my yard just about every 30 minutes since early this morning. Finally, the little guy was comfy enough to pee around 10am this morning. The big outdoors is so new to him, he’s freaked out by noises, leaves, snow, you name it.
For Edgar to learn to pee and poop outdoors will take consistency on our part and will require him to go repeatedly outside of his comfort zone. As I had to explain to my kids, just because he pee’d and pooped outside today, we’re not finished. Tomorrow, we’ve got to do the same routine, no matter how cold, windy or wet it is.
For any of us to create healthy habits, such as eating real food made at home, requires those qualities too. It might not be easy in the beginning to make a pot of oatmeal for breakfast instead of grabbing a bagel or donut, but day after day, it gets easier.
Just like I’m here for Edgar cheering him on when he is successful, I’m here for you as well! Consider hiring me as part of your support team to help build habits that will support your health.
Great post. I was just talking about healthy habits yesterday with HS students. Congrats on the new addition.
the name i was thinking of was close: oscar
Borrow another dog who will teach Edgar the ropes. Dogs learn by imitating their own kind. Once the other dog marks your yard with peepee/poopoo spots, Edgar will know what to do…..I promise!
