My Little Rosemary Holiday Trees

When it comes to Christmas trees, I like to think that I’m a tree hugger not a tree killer. Seeing trees tied to the top of someone’s car en route to their home always made me sort of sad. In the past years, we’ve tried to buy live trees but the never really make a good transition back outside. As a result, we’ve got a couple of real Charlie Brown trees in our yard.

This year, I found a good solution. A rosemary bush  trimmed to look like a Christmas tree. My living room is filled with rosemary fragrance and now I’ve got a nice stash of herbs close by.

According to Herb Companion, rosemary has been used since ancient times to season foods, to make personal hygiene products, in religious traditions and for protection from evil. Sprigs of dried rosemary were burned to clear spaces of negativity, evil spirits and illness. Fresh rosemary sprigs were placed in pillows to encourage good dreams and ward off nightmares.

Here’s some other good ideas I found:

Rosemary Bean Dip: Puree a can of rinsed white beans with rosemary, garlic, and enough lemon juice and olive oil for dipping consistency.

Herb rub for chicken or lamb.  Create a half-and-half mixture of finely chopped rosemary and kosher salt. Rub on chicken or lamb.

Yummy Leftovers: Leftover turkey sandwiches become special when slathered with rosemary sandwich spread. Mix 1 teaspoon of finely chopped rosemary with ½ cup mayonnaise and a squirt of spicy mustard.

Rosemary Pesto: Create a blend of walnut oil, walnuts and rosemary in your food processor.

Rosemary Hair Rinse

Rosemary Hair Rinse: Steep a couple of sprigs of freshly cut rosemary in filtered  water for a couple of days, or boil them in water, add an equal amount of clear water and use it to rinse your hair after shampooing for a fresh, clean, natural shine.

Rosemary spray. To make a natural, pine-scented disinfectant spray chop up fresh rosemary, add it to boiling water for about 3 minutes, strain, and put into a spray bottle. Use it in your kitchen and bathroom.
Soak in the tub. Add rosemary to your bath water to soothe sore muscles.
Rosemary tea. Rosemary tea can relieve indigestion and bloating. Has been shown to improve memory too. Pour 1 cup of boiling water over 1 teaspoon of rosemary leaves, cover, steep for 5-10 minutes, strain.
