My youngest daughter has taught me tons about picky eaters over the last 10 years. She’s been quite a challenge when it comes to getting her to eat food that isn’t baked or boiled flour. Her older sisters eat all sorts of veggies, fish and even funky seafood, but not this one, she dares to be different!
They say you teach what you need to learn. Thanks to the experiences of my picky eater, I’ve been teaching picky eater workshops for a number of years now and I’m also writing a book about picky eating and mono diets. It’s one of the biggest stumbling blocks that moms have when trying to get their families to eat healthier.
This week, I had a huge breakthrough with my picky eater. She made me dinner AND she ate it herself! It was a simple stir fry that she created with some veggies she found in the fridge along with some leftover grilled chicken from the night before. She wanted to surprise me, so she and her babysitter created it while I was coming home from work. Her babysitter tells me it was her idea, she created the recipe and did all the chopping. The babysitter merely sauteed everything and followed my daughter’s directions.
Imagine my joy when I came home to a clean kitchen with dinner on the table. What topped that was the sight of my daughter eating sauteed veggies, including onions, with a proud smile.
Priceless.
It goes to show that when kids get involved in preparing food, they end up eating it!
